Industrial methods of preparation 


air and water being the resources in which oxygen is abundantly available, oxygen is prepared at a large scale from these natural resources. 


1Fractional distillation of liquid air:

The various steps involved are given below: 

(a) Removal of dust particles: Air should be first free from dust particles, this is done by passing air either through filters or through electric precipitators. 

(b) Removal of water vapor: The air free of dust particles is passed through conc. h2so4, or anhydrous calcium chloride.  

(c) Removal of co2 :The dry air is passed through caustic soda or caustic potash. 

(d) Liquefaction of air: A high presspre of 100 atm-200 atm range is applied to dry air. Then air is allowed to expand by pumping it through a fine jet. This sudden expansion results in cooling. The same process is repeated a number of times so that the temperature is decreased and air is converted to liquid state. Liquid air is obtained at -200 °C.  

(e) Fractional distillation of liquid air: Liquid air mainly contains liquid nitrogen and liquid oxygen. Liquid nitrogen has a boiling point of -95°C and liquid oxygen lus a boiling point of -182.9 °C. These liquids can be separated by fractional distillation. 

As nitrogen has a lower boiling point, it evaporates first leaving behind liquid oxygen.  Gentle heating of liquid oxygen gives oxygen gas. 


2Electrolysis of water

If a little amount of sulphuric acid is added to water, the water then is called acidulated water when this is subjected to electrolysis, water decomposes to give hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen is liberated at the cathode and oxygen is liberated at the anode.

Experiment IV 

Acidulated water is taken in a rectangular tank. Platinum plates are inserted into the tank, which are connected to the opposite terminals of the battery. When a high voltage is passed through the tank, water electrolyses to give hydrogen gas at the cathode and oxygen gas at the anode.


Industrial methods of preparation oxygen advantages 


(a) The process is comparatively economical and can be used especially in places where the electricity is available at cheaper rates. 


(b) Hydrogen gas is obtained as a by-product.


Oxygen is a colorless, odorless, tasteless and a non-poisonous gas. Its vapore density is 16. Boiling and freezing points of oare -183 ° C and -218 ° C, respectively. Oxygen is slightly soluble in water.
